Joseph Sparrowhawk and Sarah Persinger

Sarah and Joseph had several children. In the state of Virginia at the time it was against the law to marry a Native American. Native people were not even considered human beings. White or Black were the only classifications. If a person was Mulatto, the person was an outcast. They were in neither class. Sarah had several Mulatto children, and they were taken away from her. The state of Virginia took her to court, and wanted to know who the father of the children was. She would not tell them. The children were considered wards of Overseers of the Poor. Andrew was the brother of Sarah, so he ended up taking the children. Interestingly enough while the children were in the Overseer of the Poor they were considered Mulatto, but once they were moved into the house of Andrew they were considered White. I am sure this made their lives a little easier, but they were still Mulatto to some people.

Sarah married another man later in life, and Joseph had to walk the Trail of Tears with two of the children he and Sarah shared. The two children were darker complected and Sarah and Joseph thought it would be too difficult for them to be considered White. Joseph died in Oklahoma, and Sarah stayed in Virginia.

Lasted So Long

Right before we started construction on our house we purchased a little house for our kids. This little rubbermaid house was a great little place for my kids. My son started stealing furniture to take the the house. The house had a phone, but not a real one, so he would often take the real phone out to his house. He had a flag flying outside of his house too. Both of the children took up stealing my good carpets. The kitchen rugs would always disappear. I was really pissed one time when I finally purchased two wool, hand hooked butterfly rugs that I had my eye on for SO long. My kids took them out to their house, along with a really cute maple stool that was not for outside. It was a little heartbreaking when that little house left our yard, but we ended up giving it to friends that had younger children than us. Alas, I don’t know what ever became of my expensive rugs.

Things I love…

I really like the look of great steps. I also enjoy doorways, and windows. The infatuation with steps is all about the movement, and aesthetics of the staircase. Color, texture, accessories that have been added for personality. Some colors are very inviting, also begging to climb. Some steps have plants integrating themselves into the fabric of the steps themselves. Maybe it is because the steps suggest movement.

Apps. That Are Good For You!

Cures from A to Z  Gives a list of ailments, and what can be done about each one. More natural cures that can be tried if you are wiling. Hypocrites once said “He who is his own doctor is his own fool.”  I have found some of their suggestions to be very helpful, but you will have to judge for yourself.

WordTouch This is one of the first games that I bought I my first iPhone. Making words in each one of the columns, and bonus points are given if a row is cleared. Word games are good for your brain.

Math Wizard I must admit…I hate math! I do know that playing math games is another way to help keep your mind sharp. This game leaves out one part of the equation and not just the sum of the numbers. Must be quick, addition, subtraction, division or multiplication. They pop up quick, so answer correctly with precision.

Brain Challenge This is a GREAT one! A doctor that leads you to the games. You can take a Brain Test or a Stress Test. You go through a series of tests in Logic, Math, Memory, Visual, and Focus. You will then get your score of how much of your brain you are utilizing. Mine was 30%. You will then be asked if you would like to play games to strengthen your skill sets.

White Noise Having problems sleeping or relaxing? This is a wonderful app that brings background noises that people like. I like the sound of the rain, and birds singing. There are LOTS of different sounds that can bring a calming and tranquil state of mind. There are clocks too, so in case there are only a few minutes to relax. Some relaxation time is better than none.

First Aid I read an article that a gentleman had this app and helped save a life of another man. I can’t remember how much I paid for the app., but I thought it would be great to have this just in case.

Medicinal Spices and Herbs If you have ever wondered what components are attributed to your favorite herb and spices this is a great app. If you need a boost in certain vitamins or minerals…check the app to see what would be best to use.

Eye Training This will give your eyes more acuity. There are 4 parts to the training, and you can even log your progress.

Nita Leger Casey

Nita Leger Casey water colors are so beautiful. I bought two of these little 3×5 paintings. I just fell in love with her work. I have several of her pieces. I have some oils and watercolors. The watercolors just have so much skill for so many details. The little lamp posts are my favorite. I have a hard time passing a gallery that has a painting with a lamp post. Look at the flower post…and the umbrellas. The buildings…I just feel as though there is a vacation right here in my home by taking a moment to look at these beautiful pieces. When I need a trip to France I just take a look at these.  The pots full of plants and flowers, people passing the cafe. The windows that look out to the street. One can use their imagination to look out those very windows. With the help of Nita I am able to go to France anytime I wish.

If you are interested in seeing more of her work go to her Gingerbread Art Studio.

If I Had A Hammer

Words and music by L. Hays and P. Seeger

If I had a hammer

I’d hammer in the morning

I’d hammer in the evening … all over this land,

I’d hammer out danger

I’d hammer out a warning

I’d hammer out love between all of my brothers and my sisters

All over this land.

If I had a bell

I’d ring it in the morning

I’d ring it in the evening … all over this land,

I’d ring out danger

I’d ring out a warning

I’d ring out love between all of my brothers and my sisters

All over this land.

If I had a song

I’d sing it in the morning

I’d sing it in the evening … all over this world,

I’d sing out danger

I’d sing out a warning

I’d sing out love between all of my brothers and my sisters

All over this land.

If I’ve got a hammer

And I’ve got a bell

And I’ve got a song to sing … all over this land,

It’s a hammer of justice

It’s a bell of freedom

It’s a song about love between all of my brothers and my sisters

All over this land.

Its a Small World

Written by: Richard M. Sherman and Robert B. Sherman

It’s a world of laughter

A world of tears

It’s a world of hopes

And a world of fears

There’s so much that we share

That it’s time we’re aware

It’s a small world after all

There is just one moon

And one golden sun

And a smile means

Friendship to ev’ryone

Though the mountains divide

And the oceans are wide

It’s a small world after all

It’s a small world after all

It’s a small world after all

It’s a small world after all

It’s a small, small world

Big Bubba’s Bad to the Bone BBQ

Saturday our family visited this establishment last Saturday. I have to tell you the place did not disappoint. Once you enter it is a little dark, as one goes across the bridge. The water under the bridge has real fish in the water.

We were greeted by a lovely waitress. I must say that the waitresses in San Luis Obispo should give instructions on customer service. I wish customer service was like this everywhere, alas we have to travel down south for excellent customer service. I digress…back to the food.

I had water, and a coffee with Baileys. We all had little “starters” Calamari was some of the best Calamari I have had in a long time. It was cooked to perfection! We also had a few mozzarella sticks. The herbs and spices were perfect, and they were dry instead of swimming in grease. They were super YUMMY!

I had the Chicken sandwich with no mustard, tomatoes on the side. The bun was whole wheat, and I asked for light on the mayo. The sprouts added just enough crunch, and nutty flavor to the chicken. The potato chips were hand made, and delicious!

Thankfully I did not overeat the chips, but I was too stuff to eat anything else. I must go back!!!

Sarah and Joseph

Joseph Sparrowhawk was not comfortable living in a house. Sarah Persinger Sparrowhawk live in a cabin. Joseph and Sarah would often visit the Cherokee village that Joseph was from, and often Joseph would go off to hunt and Sarah would stay home.
There were times that Sarah would play the stick game with the others in the Cherokee village. It has been said that Sarah was really good at the stick game (we call it lacrosse now). Sarah enjoyed hunting with Joseph too. One story that I am familiar with went a little something like this…
Sarah’s mom was working in the vegetable garden saw only figures of two people walking toward her. Since they were in the sun she knew that the two were dressed in the Native way. She saw that one of the figures were carrying something. As the figures got closer she finally saw that it was Sarah and Joseph. Sarah had a deer over her shoulders. Sarah greeted her mom, and showed off her deer. How did Sarah kill the deer. Joseph told her that Sarah finally learned how to stand as silent as a tree. Sarah had always had a jaw that did not waver. Soon the brothers of Sarah show up to see her with her deer. They teased her about her hunt, and she was not going to take being teased. She told them to set up some apples and she would show them how good she was with a bow and arrow. The boys set up some apples. She missed the first one, but got the second one square in the middle. Joseph was so proud he cheered for her.
Once Sarah was pregnant she could no longer enjoy as much hunting. Often Joseph was gone. As Sarah got closer to her date of possible delivery a family member would go to check on her. During the delivery of her first she was all alone in her cabin. Just as the head came out one of her brothers just arrived. He helped her as she gave birth. The first baby she named Gabriel after the Angel since she believed that it was Heaven that sent her brother to the cabin at that time. She wasn’t done. One more child…this explains so much she said…I wondered why I was so big and so uncomfortable…I was carrying twins all this time.
Next time I will tell you what becomes of her children.

Repetition

Repetition is the way children learn. My husband and I would take our children for long weekend walks. We live in the hills so we would sometimes use our little wagon. We also used the backpack to put the children in, and the stroller, but once our children were old enough we had them walk. We really enjoyed those long walks. The children would come home and take a long nap after we got home. They learned their way around our neighborhood.

Jesuits And Skulls

I am a Roman Catholic. I was married in a Jesuit Church. I have seen so much erroneous information that we worship skulls and it is evil. This is just ignorance and arrogance. One phrase that is said over and over is “Find God in All Things, Find God in All People, Every Place, and EveryThing.” I think in this modern age we forget how close death was to everyone even 100 years ago. People usually had several generations of people in one home or close in the same community. People died from simple infections, and disease spread through families quickly. More importantly the Masons were started after the Cathedrals were built. Yes, they were a group of people that were a guild, later they would grow to the establishment they are today. Even this group is not evil! They have a broader scoop of religious beliefs. I just don’t understand why people are so quick to be judge others in such a harsh way. Religions all over the world have more in common with each other than differences, but some people just want to focus on something they construe as bad. Here are some images that the negative people focus on as negative.

Spiritual Exercises are one of the many things that Ignatius worked on in his life. If you are interested you could go here to listen to Spiritual Exercises. Ignatius was for education, keeping your body, mind and spirit tuned. At times when people had to stand for our faith they did, and some of those people died doing so. The crown upon the head of the skull is because this person was a Martyr. These people stood up for what they believed. Just because there are people around him praying does not mean they are worshipping a dead body or a skull. When people gather at a funeral they are not there to worship the person, they are there to remember the life they once lived. Sometimes skulls are all that is left of a Martyr. If the skull is brought out of a crypt is not being worshipped we are remembering that it has not always been so easy to be a Christian.

There are many images of St. Francis Borgia gazing at a skull.

Again we have the skull with a crown. St. Francis Borgia is remembering the life of someone that gave their life for Christians everywhere. Some other images of St. Francis with skulls

Here is St. Francis with a skull wearing a halo. The artist may have only wanted to hint at St. Francis and his adoration for Martyrs of Christianity.

St. Francis with a Martyr donning a crown on top of a book. The Jesuits were and still are to this day promoters of education. Behind St. Francis is a choir of angels and the Monstrance-Reliquary in the background.

This images almost seems to beg the question from St. Francis if we would be willing to be a Martyr for our faith. His eyes look right at us showing us that others have given their lives for us to have this freedom to participate Christianity.

Here again is St. Francis with a Martyr and a beckon on light in the background. I am guessing that this too is a Monstrance-Reliquary the light around it is the light on Christ. The light of Christ illuminates us in many different ways and variations for different people. Some people may feel moved to read the Bible more, while some people may be moved to help people, animals, or the environment. Why people have to criticise others for their callings is beyond me.

This is one of my favorites…

Here we have St. Francis is in a library, an appropriate place for a Jesuit. Jesuits were the founders of many Universities. Behind him is the crucifix to remind the viewer that Jesus died for all of us. The Monstrance-Reliquary is in his hand. A pen in the ink well. A reminder to all of us that writing is important. The skull of a Martyr, and paper  or maybe a letter in front of him. A letter to possibly to his good friend St. Ignatius?
And the last one that I am going to show you…

A sculpture of St. Francis with a Martyr for Christianity. A book at his side to remind the onlookers how important education is to all of us.

All of us need to educated ourselves before we jump to wild conclusions. Even fellow Christians are guilty of the same thing. The Davinci Code was a great book, and people were going mad over the contents. I read the book, and honestly…even if Jesus did have a child I would still be Catholic. I enjoy being a Catholic. I also enjoy reading a plethora of other materials that provoke thought.

Thoughts do not equate evil. There are many ways to educate yourself. There are even so many ways to enjoy learning for free through iTunes University. Skulls don’t equate with all thing evil either. There is beauty in so many things, and there is also God in all things. What are some ways that you educate yourself?
